CULTURE NEWS

  • The annual Ukrainian Festival is happening today at the Polish Community Center on Washington Avenue Ext. in Albany. It raises funds for 518Ukrainians—helping those in Ukraine during the Russian war—while featuring traditional foods, crafts and live performances until 10 p.m.  ABC NEWS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A statewide report shows tourism in the Capital-Saratoga region generated $2.85 billion in visitor spending in 2024 and supported 35K jobs, with Albany County leading the spending. Food and lodging purchases drove revenue and state and local governments collected $347 million in taxes + the report highlights a boost in regional economic growth.  Spotlight News

  • Riverkeeper is monitoring the largest harmful algae bloom in the history of the Hudson River estuary, which is centered near Kingston and visible along the shorelines of Catskill, Hudson, Esopus and Hyde Park—residents are advised not to touch the water and to report any sightings to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kathy Hochul joined East Greenbush police officials on Friday to unveil nearly $400,000 in new equipment—including drones, dispatch center consoles, night vision goggles, and portable radios—as part of a $127 million state grant to modernize police operations. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin criticized the press conference, saying it underscored differences in crime policies between local communities.  NewsChannel 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • A mother is suing Albany Medical Center for alleged malpractice after her one-month-old daughter, Milani Finch, died in April following repeated emergency visits for breathing problems—she claims the hospital discharged her baby despite worsening symptoms. She also held a protest outside the hospital and petitioned for an investigation into its care practices.  Times Union
  • Madison Ave Pharmacy opened inside the Albany Damien Center on Friday and offers free delivery, help with prescription refills, pill packaging and advice from expert pharmacists with a focus on HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and STIs. The pharmacy is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 728 Madison Ave — serving local patients with confidential care.  Times Union
  • Eleven-year-old Mason Queary led a parade on the field at Yankee Stadium—drawing cheers from thousands as he fights cancer. He was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and underwent extensive treatment, and he remains determined to regain his strength.  ABC NEWS 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • NYSPHSAA is moving forward with new statewide classification standards for private and charter schools so that nonpublic teams compete separately from public schools. A bill was reintroduced in the Assembly and an ad hoc committee met to review proposals — a vote on the plan is set for October in Albany, with changes to take effect in fall 2026.  Times Union
  • Today, 21 Section 2 football games begin with most matchups starting at 7 p.m., including contests such as Shenendehowa at Niskayuna and Averill Park at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk — the Times Union scoreboard will update all evening as teams fight to avoid early losses.  Times Union
  • UAlbany football returns home today for its first game of 2025 at Casey Stadium against the New Haven Chargers, with kickoff scheduled at 7:00 p.m. Fenimore Asset Management sponsors the game—featuring a halftime fireworks display.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany opened the Boston College Invitational by sweeping Dartmouth in three sets at Connell Recreation Center in Chestnut Hill—they won each set 25 to 20, 25 to 15 and 25 to 20. The team will face Sacramento State tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.—its next match is scheduled against Boston College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany announced 53 new student-athletes joining its cross country and track and field programs for the 2025-26 season—28 women and 25 men. The group features nine local recruits, 10 transfer students, and 10 international students.  University at Albany
