COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Colonie kids had a fun day at the Pioneer Charitable Foundation's 6th annual Grand Carnival—playing games, getting face painting, and enjoying balloons to support local nonprofits that help children. The event, which draws about 1,000 attendees annually, has raised over $245,000 and shows the foundation’s commitment to letting kids be kids.  WRGB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • National Grid is installing smart meters at local gas and electric customers' homes and has mailed notices that explain residents who opt out will face an added monthly fee. The new meters provide near-real-time usage tracking and enable remote shut-off during emergencies—features that do not change supply rates.  Times Union

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered at the Capital Region's third annual Ukrainian Festival in Albany—organized by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America—to honor Ukrainian culture and raise funds for humanitarian aid. Dr. Andrij Baran said the event is expected to raise $75 thousand and has collected medical supplies and FPV drones for shipment to Ukraine.  WRGB
  • Grammy-nominated blues artist Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes and his protégé Ryan Lee Crosby will perform today at Meadowlark Festival. Holmes—one of the last to play the Mississippi blues style—will bring his raw sound to the crowd in his first Northeast show in more than ten years.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Office of General Services is hosting a public workshop Wednesday at the Empire State Plaza Food Court from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—attendees are encouraged to register early as space is limited and free light refreshments will be served. The event is part of Governor Hochul’s $400 million initiative to revitalize Albany’s downtown and cultural institutions.  ABC NEWS 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University at Albany football team lost its home opener to the New Haven Chargers by a score of 17 to 24 at Casey Stadium. Quarterback Jack Shields threw for 396 yards — his season high — and running back Griffin Woodell scored as New Haven built an early lead with two touchdown passes and a field goal.  University at Albany
  • The Great Danes competed at the Jasper Invitational on Saturday where freshmen Owen Stachlik finished 24th in the men’s 8k race and freshmen Arianna Verardi placed 46th in the women’s 6k race—this was their first participation in over 20 years. The team will take a mid-season break before returning on October 10 at the Hopkinton Cross Country Festival to preview the America East Championship course.  University at Albany
