COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of the Greater Capital Region will celebrate local women and non-profits for their work in education, health, and financial opportunities with a Power Pitch event on December 3 at Brown’s Revolution Hall in Troy—finalists will present their ideas in a TED talk style and one winning finalist will receive a $10,000 award while runners-up gain financial recognition.  ABC NEWS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lulu Grey—ten-year-old non-binary musical prodigy—will release their first album on Friday, September 26th at Lark Hall in Albany. They began playing guitar during COVID with their grandpa and now use music to share heartfelt emotions.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Moon is the manager and musician at Alias Coffee located at 76th North Pearl Street in Albany, where he makes quality drinks for local regulars. He runs the busy cafe while championing sustainable practices—using reusable mugs for to-stay orders—and sharing his passion for music with the community.  Albany Student Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAlbany was ranked the top SUNY school by Washington Monthly after the college evaluated academic outcomes, affordability and public service, and it ranked seventh in New York and 78th nationally while also earning 39th in Best Bang for the Buck. President Havidán Rodríguez said the ranking will fuel new opportunities for student success and community service—reflecting strong support from the campus community.  Albany Student Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental experts are monitoring the Hudson River after several harmful algal blooms were confirmed in August and September, and the DEC has advised residents and visitors to avoid contact with discolored water. Riverkeeper reported that the extensive bloom near Kingston in the river’s estuary is the most widespread in living memory.  ABC NEWS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York Attorney General Letitia James and state Sen. Andrew Gounardes announced new rules that restrict social media companies from using algorithmic feeds for young users and require parental consent and age verification. The rules also ban notifications from midnight—6 a.m. and may cut ad revenue for the six biggest platforms.  Times Union
  • Mayor Kathy Sheehan urged the Common Council in a Friday letter to repeal the 2023 inclusionary zoning law—arguing that the increased affordable housing requirements have cut market-rate housing and pushed development to outlying areas—and warned that the city risks losing a $200 million downtown investment. Residents have been urged to lobby the council—part of the push to reverse housing shortages—before the bill is discussed at a caucus meeting on Monday evening.  Times Union
  • Albany has installed AI cameras on more than 100 school buses to catch drivers who pass stopped buses—ticketing will begin on October 20th with fines from $250 to $300 to improve student safety.  WAMC
  • Activists urged the New York State Assembly to pass the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act at a rally outside state Capitol on Saturday, September 15th. They said the bill would phase out non-recyclable packaging and force companies to pay for cleaning up waste — a measure that had passed in the Senate but stalled in the Assembly.  WAMC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The New York State Attorney General's Office is seeking Albany tenants who paid high fees after landlord Asaf Elkayam and his company were found to have violated tenant rights by overcharging renters and entering apartments without notice. Affected students—many from UAlbany—might be eligible for restitution as Elkayam must pay penalties and revise his business practices.  Albany Student Press
