COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Upstate New York communities will join four planned walks organized by the Capital Region chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention during National Suicide Prevention Month. The events scheduled for September 20th in Lake Placid, September 27th in Schenectady, September 28th in Saratoga and October 5th in Catskill will feature speeches and activities to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention programs.  ABC NEWS 10
  • The Regional Food Bank will host its 31st annual CHEFS event on Wednesday, September 24—bringing together local chefs, farmers, and supporters to raise awareness for a nonprofit that serves 23 counties—across the Capital Region, Southern Tier, and North Country.  WAMC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Albany will see a new $200M mixed-use office building as law firm Whiteman Osterman & Hanna moves 200 employees to 705 Broadway — the project includes 56 apartment units and ground-floor retail. Developers will seek $10M from Governor Hochul’s downtown revitalization plan and work with local officials to complete the project by 2027.  ABC NEWS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Siena University and DNA Finders are hosting the state's second Cold Case Day on Friday, September 26 at 4:00 p.m. at Roger Bacon Hall’s Key Auditorium—experts including Jana DeCamilla, Adam Hornick, Dr. Camela Hughes and Tobi Kirschmann will share new techniques to work on missing persons and unsolved cases.  WRGB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today in the Warehouse District, Zone 518 opened its immersive holographic theater with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. at 21 Erie Boulevard—offering team-based virtual reality adventures for families, friends and co-workers.  NewsChannel 13
  • Mikaela Davis will perform today in Syracuse as part of the 315 Thursdays summer concert series, then she will take the stage tomorrow in Kingston where WAMC On the Road will record a live concert hosted by Sarah LaDuke. She will continue with shows on Saturday in Albany and Sunday in Brattleboro — events that promise fresh music and festival insights.  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University at Albany and Broadview Federal Credit Union signed an agreement on Sept 17th to offer non-credit educational programs for Broadview employees, with three certificate courses in AI, leadership, and business writing set to begin this fall. The programs will run through winter into spring and are expected to serve as a model for future partnerships with industry leaders.  University at Albany

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today the DEC warned that a harmful algal bloom is spreading along the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie to Germantown, and a scientist with Riverkeeper said it was first seen in Kingston three weeks ago—he warned that the bloom may cause illness in people and animals and urged residents not to swim or drink the water.  ABC NEWS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albany’s Lincoln Park Pool, reopened in early July after a $25 million renovation that started in December 2023, had over 32,000 visitors this summer. City officials plan to create a revenue model — they are considering charging nonresident fees next year while keeping access free for Albany residents.  WAMC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health insurance premiums in New York are rising as federal policy changes and expiring tax credits will force a couple's monthly payment to increase by about $228—experts warn that if Congress does not act soon, many residents and small businesses may face higher costs and loss of coverage.  Times Union
  • September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness month and aims to educate women about cancers and encourage early detection through screenings. Dr. Joyce Barlin of Women’s Cancer Care Associates said rising obesity rates have led to more uterine cancer cases—making regular gynecologist visits important.  ABC NEWS 10
