BUSINESS NEWS

  • The food waste reduction app Too Good To Go is growing in the Capital Region and now helps restaurants cut waste. The service will expand soon — reaching new stores and giving local businesses a way to save food.  The Daily Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Live music returned to Lark Street today with the launch of Lark Out Loud, a day festival featuring local tribute bands that aim to revive the street's energy after a five-year break—organizers expect over a thousand people and plan to run the event again next year. Local business owners report that the festival boosts foot traffic and a portion of each shirt sale will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kathy Hochul announced Saturday the launch of the DEC Get Offline, Get Outside Challenge for youth ages 12-18 at the Fall Festival at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Cheektowaga—participants who complete all 50 outdoor activities before turning 19 will earn a commemorative sticker, certificate, and prizes. This effort aims to help youth disconnect from screens and enjoy New York's public lands.  WRGB
  • Residents enjoyed Fall Fest at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar, where Girl Scouts and forest service staff taught green living at the annual event — featuring fun attractions like plastic bass fishing. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Environmental Protection Agency announced yesterday it will roll back drinking water limits on several PFAS chemicals — a move that leaves limits for PFOA and PFOS unchanged while removing restrictions on three other compounds. A state spokesperson said Governor Hochul’s administration is countering the change with a $6 billion investment in clean water as public health advocates warn the rollback is dangerous.  WAMC
  • The Albany Water Department began repairs on a 24 inch water main under Henry Johnson Boulevard at 5 a.m. Saturday — drivers are advised to use alternate routes due to lane restrictions at the Henry Johnson and Livingston intersection.  WRGB
  • Officials said that Empire Plaza received millions, including $25 million for future improvements to reconnect residents to government infrastructure—an effort to revitalize an underused public space. Meanwhile, leader DeeDee Kelly holds free dance practices in the concourse to honor her niece killed by a stray bullet in 2021.  Times Union
  • Residents in Mechanicville say tap water smells musty like mold, leaving many frustrated with smelly showers and cookware. The mayor said the EPA removed an $800,000 grant for water upgrades—while a Syracuse University team will provide an action plan by Nov. 30 to address the issue.  Times Union

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families across the Capital Region gathered at the Reverse Rett Fall Festival on Saturday in Speigletown to raise money and awareness for Rett Syndrome—a rare neurological disorder. Organizers said the event has raised $1.2 million over three years and expected an attendance of 2,500 this year to support research and connect affected families.  ABC NEWS 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University at Albany men's soccer team lost 2-0 to Princeton at Myslik Field in Princeton on Saturday night; Princeton scored from a penalty in the 43rd minute and added a goal in the 85th minute. The Great Danes will play Siena on Tuesday (September 23) at 4:00 p.m. in Loudonville.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany played a four-set match against Ole Miss at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas—losing with scores of 25-23, 25-27, 25-23 and 25-19. The Great Danes will return home on Sept. 26 at 6:00 p.m. to face Binghamton.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany football team won its first season game by beating Cornell 13-10 at Casey Stadium with key plays from running back Jojo Uga. Head coach Jared Ambrose said his team will face New Hampshire next week—marking a promising start to conference play.  University at Albany
