Good morning, Albany. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 23rd of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, 100 cyclists biked 100 miles through Saratoga County to raise awareness for missing children and support school safety education—an event that started at 7 a.m. Local law enforcement and community members joined the tribute by wearing commemorative pins to honor those missing.  WAMC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The NYS Writers Institute will host the Albany Book Festival on September 27 at the University at Albany uptown campus, drawing thousands of book lovers from the Capital Region. The daylong event will include bestselling authors, panel talks, book signing and online workshops for new writers — with open mic sessions for local poets and authors.  WAMC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New York Attorney General Letitia James is co-leading a coalition with other state and local officials to oppose the EPA plan to reverse the 2009 Endangerment Finding that links greenhouse gases to climate change. The group warns the rollback will heighten health risks such as asthma and heart disease—especially for vulnerable communities.  WRGB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Assemblyman Robert Smullen asked the state to lower speed limits and add safety measures—like speed cameras and crosswalks—on Route 7 after his son was killed on Feb. 22, 2024 and after two other fatal crashes occurred on the same stretch.  NewsChannel 13
  • Assemblyman Robert Smullen held a press conference at the Capitol on September 22nd after a fatal motorcycle crash on State Route 7 near Bellevue Woman’s Center in Niskayuna, where his son and another pedestrian died — he demanded immediate DOT action including digital speed limit signs and town hall meetings to address daily speeding on the busy road.  ABC NEWS 10
  • A FOIL request shows that hundreds of water main breaks occurred in the Capital Region over the past year, with aging pipes causing brown water and prolonged service outages. Albany’s water department has averaged over eight hours to fix breaks instead of its six-hour goal while Troy officials plan to seek grants to replace centuries-old pipes — a problem that continues to affect local residents.  NewsChannel 13
  • A report from the State Comptroller's office says a federal reconciliation bill has created a $34.3 billion budget gap that mirrors New York's financial strain during the global crisis in April 2009. The law, which permanently preserves parts of the 2017 tax cuts and jobs act, will raise state debt and force cuts to programs relied on by low- and middle-income New Yorkers — putting future projects and services at risk.  ABC NEWS 10
  • New York Governor Kathy Hochul launched MOVE IN NY, a program that uses manufactured modular homes to ease housing affordability by placing a bright blue home in Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant. The state plans to build 200 homes with $50 million and local groups + home manufacturers can apply to develop additional sites if the pilot proves effective.  WAMC
  • The Department of Transportation announced that the Exit 3 ramp on I-787 northbound to U.S. Routes 9 and 20 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on September 25 for a routine inspection of the Dunn Memorial Bridge—drivers are advised to follow the detour via the South Mall Expressway.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Six New York Army National Guard officers and one master sergeant are advising the Swedish Army in its first division-level Command Post Exercise that began on September 13. They are serving as observers and advisors at the exercise held at Swedish Ground Combat School in Enköping—helping the Swedish Army refine its plans under the State Partnership Program.  Times Union
