- ➤ The New York State Writers Institute hosted the 8th Annual Albany Book Festival on Sept. 27 at the University at Albany — where readers enjoyed a daylong celebration of books and ideas. The event began with the installation of author Min Jin Lee and poet Kimiko Hahn on Sept. 26 and featured a lineup of award-winning writers. University at Albany

- ➤ The University at Albany earned recertification for the prestigious Seal of Excelencia from Excelencia in Education on Sept. 30. It joins 18 colleges recognized for helping students succeed—especially Latino students. University at Albany
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday night, the Albany Community Police Review Board met at City Hall to discuss a 9-month delay in getting transition materials from the city. Public Safety Chair Tom Hoey and Board Chair Antoinette Santos said the board needs the actual portable drive—rather than a digital copy—and a meeting is scheduled for October 8 to resolve the information transfer issues. - ➤ The U.S. Postal Service will host 10 job fairs in October in Albany, Schoharie and Warren counties—offering City Carrier Assistant and Rural Carrier Associate roles with starting wages of $20.73 and $20.38. The events will be held on different dates at venues like the Albany General Mail Facility and Albany Career Center—applicants must be 18 or older and pass a background check and drug screening when applying online. - ➤ Albany’s Bath House No. 2 is on the market through a city-issued RFP to find a developer who will adaptively reuse the historic landmark in the South End/Groesbeckville Historic District. Proposals must include details on team, use, modifications and community benefits and are due by Nov. 27 (questions will be accepted until Nov. 8). Times Union
- ➤ New York State lawmakers are considering a bill that would expand the Blue Envelope Program to help drivers with mental health conditions communicate more safely during traffic stops—if passed, the program will be standardized statewide with free envelopes available at all DMV offices and law enforcement receiving uniform training. Several counties already have similar programs, and the bill, which cleared the Senate in June, now awaits action in the Assembly Transportation Committee. ABC NEWS 10

- ➤ New York Attorney General Letitia James reached a settlement with pharmaceutical company Indivior over misleading promotion of the opioid overdose drug Opvee. Under the deal, Indivior will stop false marketing, return sales money to officials, and change its advertising practices—steps meant to protect public health and government efforts to fight the opioid crisis. - ➤ Researchers from UAlbany and SUNY Downstate unveiled AI tools for mental health at the Global Center for AI in Mental Health summit in Manhattan on Sept. 30—tools designed to help disaster survivors and give therapists real-time feedback. They worked with partners like Google to create prototypes that aim to close gaps in mental health care access. University at Albany
- ➤ A report by the Commonwealth Fund and Northeastern University showed Vermont and New York’s healthcare systems were the best prepared to face climate change impacts. Vermont was noted for its strong energy policies while New York, though good on clean energy, must improve its air quality—factors that help keep essential services running in extreme weather. WAMC
