CRIME NEWS
- ➤ County officials and law enforcement on Oct 1 urged for a state law to bar Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders from living within 1,500 feet of schools after a community member raised concerns about a resident near Castleton Elementary. They held a news conference in East Greenbush—supporting the decades-old proposal—while noting past legal challenges to similar measures. Times Union

- ➤ WAM Theatre is set to present the world premiere of '1999' by Stacey Isom Campbell which tells the story of a student who complains about a film made by Harvey Weinstein and of Emma facing guilt from actions in 1999—exploring how trauma touches three women’s lives. The play is a finalist for the 2025 Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and Modern New Works Festival and will run in the Berkshires from October 16 through November 2—under the direction of Artistic Director Genée Coreno. - ➤ South Colonie CSD will host a school bus rodeo on October 18 at Sand Creek Middle School parking lot — a test of driving skills on an obstacle course designed for community members and bus drivers. - ➤ A black bear cub that was found in a dog crate at a Fulton County home in June was taken to a wildlife center in Greene County where it grew larger before officials released it back into the Adirondacks last week. Officials warned that keeping wild animals in captivity is illegal. ABC NEWS 10

- ➤ Mayor Sheehan presented her final budget proposal for Albany with about $277M in operating funds and investments in safety and youth support—allocating $2M for police body cameras and $500K for youth initiatives. She highlighted a 3% increase from last year along with a 21% drop in overall crime and a 54% decline in shootings from 2024 to 2025. WRGB
- ➤ Domestic violence advocacy groups urged Gov. Hochul on Monday to include Kyra’s Law in the fiscal year 2027 Executive Budget to reform family court by requiring courts to review abuse claims before awarding custody. If enacted, the law—named after a 2-year-old victim—will take effect 270 days later and ban granting custody solely to improve a parent’s relationship with their child. ABC NEWS 10

- ➤ Some Niskayuna homes have high copper levels in their tap water, causing stains and a metallic taste that has residents worried about their health. - ➤ Breast Cancer Awareness Month began on October 1 in Albany and the campaign urged women to have yearly mammograms from age 40 or sooner if they have a family history to catch cancer early. Dr. Jennifer Brady from Troy Surgical Associates spoke at Women’s Health Wednesday and explained that surgery is usually needed when cancer is found — offering clear options for treatment.
