ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire engulfed a two-story home on Twiller Street on Monday morning, killing three children and two adults and damaging nearby houses while over 40 firefighters battled the blaze—and hundreds gathered on Tuesday at a vigil where Nancy Bussing DeCamp thanked community members for their support.  Times Union

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ama Cocina, a downtown Albany restaurant known for serving Mexican street food, will close its doors on October 25—officials announced the shutdown on social media and thanked customers and staff for their years of support. Chef Jermaine Wright, who took over the kitchen in July, said the restaurant values the memories created here.  ABC NEWS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • CBS6 Albany reporter Greg Floyd has been selected as a presenter at the 68th Annual New York Emmy Awards — the first time a Capital Region journalist will take on a major category role. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 12 in New York City and highlights CBS6's strong nominations and statewide recognition.  WRGB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Omar M. Yaghi, an alum from UAlbany and HVCC, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on metal-organic frameworks—materials that capture gases like hydrogen and carbon dioxide—and shares the prize with researchers from Kyoto and Melbourne.  ABC NEWS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York will raise its top unemployment benefit to $869 per week starting Monday — an increase from the old $504 cap. The change comes after the state cleared a nearly $7 billion debt, and about one in four unemployed will see higher payments automatically.  Times Union
  • Federal workers at Albany International Airport are not receiving their normal paychecks because of the government shutdown, although travelers face no delays. TSA agents will get partial payments soon—if the shutdown lasts more than three weeks, they will miss entire paychecks.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Supporters of Medical Aid in Dying gathered at the Capitol's War Room today to ask Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the bill that would let terminally ill adults with six months or less to live request and take medicine to end their lives—handing over a letter signed by over 4,200 New Yorkers. The governor will consider the bill before her end-of-year decision as groups like the state Catholic Conference remain opposed.  ABC NEWS 10
  • City officials and community members in Albany announced they will work together to create a new Climate Action Plan called Act Now Albany: Coming Together for Climate Action—designed to review climate risks and build on measures like renewable energy use and tree planting. Residents can take a vulnerability survey to help pinpoint the resources needed to face extreme weather hazards.  ABC NEWS 10
  • After one year, Albany’s school zone speed cameras issued 206,000 speeding tickets at $50 each, generating $7.66M in fines — with about 40% collected by the city — and officials reported that fewer crashes have freed up police to focus on urgent duties.  NewsChannel 13

  • Local health experts said women should get annual breast cancer screenings starting at age 40—sooner if there is a family history. Dr. Lynn Choi at Albany Med Breast Care Center noted that more young women are getting breast cancer and advised those with dense breast tissue to ask for both mammograms and ultrasounds.  ABC NEWS 10
  • State reforms to medical debt laws cut hospital lawsuits from 14,000 to 100 a year and reduced collections, a report shows. Hospitals like St. Peter’s Health Partners ended practices such as wage garnishments and home liens — changes that help local patients avoid steep bills.  Times Union
