COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Guilderland Central School District will host a Biannual Recycling Extravaganza next weekend at Farnsworth Middle School—6072 State Farm Road—from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors will accept gently used instruments, cell phones, sneakers, clothing, and select electronics for recycling, reuse, or repurposing.  ABC NEWS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two fatal plane crashes involving pilots with BasicMed certification—which allows less FAA oversight—raised debate over the safety of older pilots; the Block Island crash on July 30 killed a legislator and the Wallkill accident on Sept. 27 claimed pilot Gerald Cotter, while experts warn that reduced oversight may have played a role and the NTSB has not yet determined a cause.  Times Union

  • Downtown Albany businesses are struggling as bar and restaurant owners face high costs and fewer customers while developers plan major projects—such as a soccer stadium, convention center expansion, and state investment—to build a live-work-play area.   • A time capsule buried on October 31 was reopened Sunday at St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church to mark its 100th anniversary. The capsule held items like a cookbook and baptism book—linking the church’s past with memories for future generations.  NewsChannel 13

  • On Oct 19, a large crowd walked through Albany's Washington Park for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk—raising funds for patients and honoring survivors and victims while sharing prevention tips.  Times Union

  • UAlbany field hockey lost 2–1 to #16 Yale at Alumni Turf on Sunday after a 60-minute contest—sophomore Tessa Overgoor scored the only goal for the Great Danes. The team, which had chances throughout the game, will host New Hampshire on Friday for their final regular-season home matchup.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany women's rowing team competed at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass on October 18 and October 19, finishing 32nd in the Women's Club 8+ and 13th in the Women's Lightweight 4+ events. The team will race next at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga on October 25.  University at Albany
