- ➤ Two fatal plane crashes involving pilots with BasicMed certification—which allows less FAA oversight—raised debate over the safety of older pilots; the Block Island crash on July 30 killed a legislator and the Wallkill accident on Sept. 27 claimed pilot Gerald Cotter, while experts warn that reduced oversight may have played a role and the NTSB has not yet determined a cause.
