COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia-Greene Humane Society reported that about a dozen pets were adopted over the weekend as free adoption week began; the program—running through Oct 25—lets approved adopters take home cats, dogs and small animals while reminding them that pet care brings ongoing costs.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Pope Leo XIV accepted Bishop Edward Scharfenberger’s resignation—auxiliary bishop Mark O’Connell was named his successor—and noted that Scharfenberger, 77, led the Albany Diocese since 2014. He was expected to speak to the press at 1:00 p.m. Monday.  WRGB

CRIME NEWS

  • The New York State Office of Cannabis Management has filed charges against Omnium Health Inc. operating as Omnium Canna for allegedly running a rent-a-license scheme that let unlicensed cannabis businesses use its license— the agency seeks to revoke the licenses and impose penalties to keep the legal market fair.  WRGB
  • Voorheesville Central School District announced on Oct 8 that a cyber-fraud incident led to the unauthorized transfer of about $1 million from its Capital Construction Fund and that around $750,000 has been recovered while police, FBI, and Secret Service investigations continue — the district will seek further reimbursement through its cyber insurance if full recovery is not possible.  WRGB

  • Pope Leo XIV named Bishop Mark O’Connell, a 61-year-old auxiliary bishop from Boston (born in Ontario), as the 11th bishop of the Albany diocese. Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger introduced him at a news conference in Albany Monday afternoon.  Times Union
  • Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s fundraising event 'SPAC in Conversation' returns tomorrow in the historic Hall of Springs featuring Julie Scelfo, an award-winning journalist and former New York Times staff writer. Scelfo, founder and Executive Director of Mothers Against Media Addiction (MAMA), will lead a discussion to combat runaway tech and protect children’s childhoods.  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAlbany alum Professor Omar M. Yaghi 85’ was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on October 20 for his work on metal-organic frameworks—he shared the honor with professors from Kyoto University and the University of Melbourne, and the award was given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.  Albany Student Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amtrak will restore one daily roundtrip between Albany and New York Penn Station on Dec. 1—Metro-North will start one daily roundtrip from Grand Central Terminal to Albany in spring. Gov. Hochul said the plan comes after riders had few trains because of tunnel repairs and sets a $99 cap on coach tickets.  NewsChannel 13

  • CDTA’s pink bus was parked at Ted’s Fish Fry on Monday to start a week-long fundraiser that gives 10% of sales to the American Cancer Society—this campaign, marking its 10th year, aims to raise $25,000 while past efforts have donated over $150,000.  WRGB

  • The University at Albany men’s basketball team has been picked to finish tied for second in the America East Preseason Coaches’ Poll—marking the highest projection for the program since 2017. Sophomore guard Amir Lindsey was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team as the Great Danes prepare for a season that starts on November 3.  University at Albany
