COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bishop Edward Scharfenberger ended his 11-year tenure as head of the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese as he introduced his successor, Bishop Mark O’Connell, while addressing bankruptcy issues and unresolved abuse lawsuits. He apologized for past harms — acknowledging the diocese's tough challenges — and urged a careful transition toward healing.  Times Union
  • Workers at Vale Cemetery in Schenectady are preparing to re-bury human remains found in a cast iron casket from the 1800s. The remains, discovered on October 13 in Hamilton Hill, will be reinterred in a section set aside for those who can’t afford burials (a plan used for similar cases in the past).  ABC NEWS 10
  • Ali Faqirzada, an Afghan refugee from Ulster County, was detained by ICE after a credible fear interview and placed in expedited removal as his attorneys challenge his detention in federal court. Hundreds attended a vigil at Bard College’s meditation garden and a GoFundMe fundraiser raised $27,000—supporting calls for his release—marking strong community backing.  Times Union

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Darrow School student, Jamison Thrower, collapsed on the basketball court in early October after a teammate blocked his dunk attempt and he stopped breathing twice until athletic trainer Allison Pritchard delivered urgent CPR—she performed chest compressions until his breathing resumed and he was taken to the hospital where he is now recovering and awaiting further tests.  ABC NEWS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rosa Commisso launches 222 Brew, a coffee brand inspired by her grandfather who ran the Albany Coffee Starr Shop on Lark Street—she offers two signature cold-brew espresso options, one caffeinated in a white can and one decaf in a black can. She plans to expand the line soon with a traditional cold brew to meet local demand.  NewsChannel 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olivia BenAoumeur, a second-year PhD student at UAlbany studying information sciences, received the U.S. Department of Defense’s SMART Scholarship on October 21 which covers full tuition, a stipend, summer internships, mentorship, and job placement after graduation—she will work with the Air Force Research Lab Sensors Directorate to apply her research in data analytics and cybersecurity education.  University at Albany
  • Michelle Hughes will speak about her new book — When Teachers Stay: Cultivating Resilient Teaching Communities — and sign copies at The Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza on Sunday, October 26th at 3PM in Albany; the event focuses on building a strong teaching community.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CARES of NY said federal uncertainty and new HUD guidelines might cut funds for homeless services and force people into unstable housing. The non-profit urged lawmakers to act quickly since contracts for key housing projects end January 31 and new projects planned for February are at risk.  WRGB
  • The city of Watervliet is asking residents to donate money to raise $3,500 for a flagpole at the Watervliet Filtration Plant to honor water department worker Eric Hurley, who died in a wrong-way crash on I-787 on Oct. 12. The flagpole will also honor other fallen water department employees — family members of deceased workers will be invited to the dedication as Lewis Thomas faces manslaughter charges.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Albany launched a new mental health-focused first responder team on September 22 to help with non-violent quality of life calls by sending crisis caseworkers in unmarked cars—these caseworkers work with police and are planning to expand to 24/7 service soon.  WRGB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Saint Peter’s Health Partners announced a partnership with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Tuesday morning to give local patients second opinions and access to tumor boards — the two-year agreement, in effect for about three months, now serves the Capital District from Jamestown to Albany.  ABC NEWS 10

  • The University at Albany women's golf team ended its fall season with a win at the Le Moyne College Invitational at Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse. They battled harsh weather and held a nine-stroke lead with Lucia Esteban tying for first at +15 — the team will return in the spring.  University at Albany
