COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Benson’s Pet Center in Clifton Park is helping federal workers with pets by providing pet food during the government shutdown's 23rd day. The center has seen about 20 more visits than usual and is hosting a fundraiser this weekend; appointments can be made by calling (518) 373-1007.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Colonie Center in Colonie will host its annual Halloween Trunk-or-Treat on Halloween Day with 12 decorated trunks, candy activities, and stores giving out treats, and the first 250 registered children will receive special trick-or-treat bags — Tri City Muscle will also offer a haunted house for a spooky experience for all ages.  NewsChannel 13
  • The government may cut SNAP funds after November 1—families are turning to local food pantries as rising grocery prices stretch budgets. A food giveaway in Troy at Central Little Leagues field ended quickly on Friday, and volunteers worry supplies may run low if demand grows.  ABC NEWS 10

  • The New York Statewide Senior Action Council warned that scammers use AI to create deepfake signatures—fake videos and voice messages—to trick seniors and misuse Medicare benefits; seniors are urged to review their Medicare statements and ignore unexpected calls.  WRGB

  • Today, Hudson Hall is hosting a preview performance of 'What is Your Hand in This?'—a special collaboration between baritone Davóne Tines and early music band Ruckus that will be broadcast live on WAMC’s On the Road series and serves as a lead-in to a national tour celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  WAMC
  • A group of local artists released a catchy parody called 'Take Me Down to Stewy's' that celebrates Stewart's Shops and has quickly gained thousands of views online + led to a meeting with the chain’s CEO, Gary Dake. The video, made earlier this month, shows the artists’ pride in their roots and has sparked a friendly buzz among fans.  NewsChannel 13
  • Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live returns to MVP Arena today and tomorrow with a new event that combines jumps, stunts, and a transforming robot—fans can also buy exclusive pre-show access to meet the trucks and drivers. Tickets are available online for both days.  WRGB

  • SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. said students should complete their FAFSA applications soon since it is still working during the shutdown, which helps over half of SUNY students get tuition aid. Empire State Weekly also discussed New York City’s mayoral race as candidates Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa prepare for the final debate.  ABC NEWS 10

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul provided more than $11M in emergency food relief on Friday to aid nearly 100 nonprofits and 10 regional food banks in fighting food insecurity amid federal funding cuts—$100K in the Capital Region will help food pantries lease trucks for better distribution.  NewsChannel 13

  • Erin Vickers shared her heart health story with CBS6 on Friday morning ahead of her scheduled talk at the Capital Region Go Red for Women Luncheon on October 30 at the Albany Capital Center—an event expected to host over 400 guests and feature keynote speaker Gabrielle Fredman, PhD and award honoree Anne Saile.  WRGB
  • The federal government shutdown is impacting New Choices Recovery Center in Schenectady—staff worry that cuts and policy changes will drive up health insurance costs and limit funding for walk-in addiction services.
