COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michael Szesnat Sr.—a disabled Marine veteran from Latham—had his roof replaced for free by Pinnacle Roofing through the Owens Corning Roof Development Project, with additional help from Allphase Complete Fire & Chimney and Velux. His wife Deborah said they had delayed needed repairs for years and were grateful for the support.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Quick Response’s Santa’s Playland Christmas Lights—located at 2077 Route 9—will open in Round Lake on November 15 and run free until January 4. Santa will appear daily from 5 to 9 p.m. as the event offers $100 VISA gift card giveaways and toy collections.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Washington Park Playground in Albany reopened Wednesday after renovations that began in June. Officials said the updated park now offers new play areas for toddlers, teens & adults, including programming spaces, parkour and fitness zones and a picnic plateau.  ABC NEWS 10
  • An analysis of U.S. Census data from 2019 to 2023 showed how age groups cluster across eight local counties, with towns like New Paltz and Albany drawing many young adults and some Ulster County communities reporting nearly half of their residents over 70—highlighting varied local needs for childcare and senior services. The findings suggest that as the older population grows, local leaders must address housing, health care, and transportation challenges.  Times Union

CULTURE NEWS

  • A roundup of November card shows for trading card fans has been scheduled throughout the Capital Region with events in Rotterdam & Albany, as well as gatherings in Fishkill and Johnstown. The shows will run from November 1 to November 30 with free or low-cost admission and special activities, including proceeds benefiting local veterans.  ABC NEWS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia-Greene Community College is launching a 15-month Licensed Practical Nurse program in January to help meet local hospital staffing needs—its new lab simulates real-life care with a $60,000 baby that can cry and seize. The program is funded by a $750,000 SUNY Transformation Fund investment—applications are currently open online.  ABC NEWS 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in the Capital Region can recycle Halloween jack-o’-lanterns by joining local pumpkin smashing compost events scheduled from November 1 to November 9. Pumpkins must be free of paint, glitter, and candles, and events in Bethlehem, Amsterdam, Schenectady, Troy, Rexford, Saratoga Springs, and Clifton Park will provide supplies and added activities—helping the community safely dispose of pumpkins before they rot.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Researchers at UAlbany’s Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences published a study that shows data from G4 hurricane hunter aircraft makes storm track forecasts more accurate for hurricanes such as Melissa, which hit Jamaica. The findings may lead to longer warning times so people can prepare — the study supports adding real-time observations to forecast models.  WAMC
  • Hurricane Melissa—a Category 5 storm—tore through Jamaica on Wednesday, causing severe damage to buildings and trees while visitors from the Capital Region became stranded. Local business leaders and residents have launched donation drives to help families affected by the storm.  ABC NEWS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Leaders at Columbia Memorial Hospital met with the community in Hudson on Wednesday to discuss changing its status to a critical access hospital so it could secure a higher reimbursement rate without cutting jobs — the facility with over 190 beds plans to retain its ICU and designate 25 beds for medical and surgical patients and 40 for behavioral health, while Greene Medical Arts in Catskill will expand its operating rooms and specialty care services.  ABC NEWS 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Officials held a preview tour on Wednesday for the new affordable housing project Colvin Avenue Commons, which features 63 apartments and over 4,000 sq. ft. of commercial space for a childcare center. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the location is ideal for working families and one-bedroom units start at $829 a month — officials noted sustainability with a ground heat system and that applications are open now.  ABC NEWS 10

  • Cricket had its biggest season yet at the NY Ovals facility in Glenville as over 200 teams played in youth and adult tournaments—growing the sport in the Capital Region. Local organizers and coaches say the new facility and growing leagues now give young players more chances to play—paving the way for future local growth.  WAMC
  • UAlbany cross country teams will travel to New Hampshire tomorrow for the 2025 America East Cross Country Championships at Hopkinton Fairgrounds (Contoocook), with the men’s 8K race starting at 11:00 a.m. and the women’s 5K race at 12:00 p.m.  University at Albany
