COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign kicked off in Troy on Saturday to raise funds for local families with food, shelter and holiday support + donations stay in the Capital Region. The group needs to collect $120,000 as food pantries now serve over 100 families each week amid concerns over SNAP cuts.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Food pantries in the Capital Region served record numbers of households on Saturday as the federal shutdown led to empty shelves at locations like Mt. Ida Food Pantry in Troy, which served 97 households in one hour. Volunteers and officials say families relying on SNAP face deep uncertainty—emergency food orders and contingency funds may not meet the rising need—while efforts to boost support continue.  Times Union

  • A Yonkers man was involved in an altercation in the parking lot of Colonie Town Hall—he now faces felony DWAI-Drugs charges as police investigate the incident.  Spotlight News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The East Greenbush Central School District said longtime Columbia High School teacher Rich Hill died on Friday morning after a medical emergency at the school—his loss deeply affected students, staff and families. The district closed the school early on Friday and said support services would be provided to help those in the community cope.  NewsChannel 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • On October 30 at 7:40 p.m., Officer Fitzgerald responded to a report on Leonard Place about a 9-month-old baby choking and gave back blows that dislodged the food, so the infant began breathing before emergency personnel arrived and took the child to Albany Medical Center Hospital.  WRGB

  • Gillian Scott recalled that family hikes on Hadley Mountain changed as her daughter lost interest in adventure days—she now plans outings with friends and her husband while looking forward to future hikes when her daughter can join more independently.   • The UAlbany field hockey team will host #6 Bryant today at 12:00 PM at Alumni Turf — fans must buy tickets at $12 for adults and $6 for players under 14. A win will push the Great Danes into the semifinals where they will face a top seed.  University at Albany
  • The UAlbany women’s rowing team finished its fall season by competing at the Heart of the Housatonic regatta on the Housatonic River in Shelton, Conn+ and the team is now training for its spring season+ to improve performance in upcoming races.  University at Albany
  • On Saturday, the University at Albany football team lost 7-37 to William & Mary at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va. Coach Jared Ambrose said the team played poorly in two of three parts — both offense and defense — and will work to fix these issues before hosting Bryant next Saturday at Casey Stadium.  University at Albany
