COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hoffman Car Wash will honor military members on Veterans Day when its stations in Albany, the Adirondacks, and Southern Vermont offer free washes on November 11. The service runs on an honor system — part of a Practice Kindness initiative that began in 2006 and has served over 80,000 vehicles.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Brian Malone from Guilderland was honored with the Outstanding Performance Award for his work as a mail fulfillment clerk at the Center for Disability Services last week at the NYSID dinner held at Rivers Casino — Resort in Schenectady, where he received a glass award and a citation from Assembly member John McDonald. He learned his tasks fast and set a high bar for his peers while meeting contract needs.  Spotlight News
  • The owners of Muddy’s Tavern in Watervliet faced major health challenges when Christine was diagnosed with stage 4 Liemyosarcoma and Edward with stage one prostate cancer last summer. They remain committed to running the tavern and serving loyal customers while adjusting daily operations—despite ongoing treatments—and relying on staff support.  ABC NEWS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brian Schaefer’s debut novel Town and Country tells the story of a small rural town facing lies and shifting allegiances during a congressional race, and The Spark of Hudson in Hudson will host a book launch event on November 8 at 6 p.m.—inviting local readers to meet the author—and celebrate the novel’s fresh look at community change.  WAMC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On November 5th, more than 30 local businesses took part in a job fair at Hudson Valley Community College—hosted by the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce—with representatives sharing information on open positions for high schoolers to adults. Organizers expected hundreds of job seekers and noted a strong need for workers in the Capital Region.  ABC NEWS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAlbany launched today a new weekly podcast called The Short Version that features brief 10-minute talks with campus experts. The debut episodes feature Chemistry guests Jeremy Feldblyum and Michael Yeung discussing groundbreaking research and ideas, with new episodes airing each Wednesday through Dec. 3—then resuming in mid-January on Simplecast, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.  University at Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Schenectady County Legislature approved an extra $150K to fill a gap in SNAP benefits caused by federal funding delays following emergency fund orders. A food pantry drive-thru will run today at 5:30 p.m. at Schenectady County Community College—volunteers and donations are welcome.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Albany County launches drive-thrus today to help residents facing food insecurity from delayed SNAP benefits—sites include Green Island, Cohoes, Watervliet and Voorheesville. County officials partner with the Regional Food Bank and expect more donations in the coming weeks—additional support is planned to meet increasing needs.  WRGB

HEALTH NEWS

  • News10 reported that studies show regular walking improves heart health, aids in weight loss and boosts mental well-being based on research following over 85,000 adults. The findings published in Nature Cardiovascular Research indicated that women may need less exercise than men to lower heart disease risks (Dr. William Douglas explained the pros and cons of treadmill and outdoor walking).  ABC NEWS 10
