COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local food pantries and community organizations collected nearly 2,000 free turkeys on Friday morning from R.J. Valente Gravel to help feed those in need; the event marked its 12th year (the Valente family started by serving local families before switching to organizations after COVID).  ABC NEWS 10
  • Farmers’ markets across the Capital Region are offering $20 FreshConnect checks to eligible New Yorkers each week via the state's FreshConnect program—checks are available while supplies last until Dec. 31. Interested shoppers should visit a market's information table for details.  ABC NEWS 10
  • This Sunday, November 23rd, the Capital City Rescue Mission will be supported by the annual (518) Musicians On A Mission fundraiser at the Capital District Irish American center—nine local acts will perform live as donations help feed the homeless with every $25 feeding 10 people. Those who are unable to attend can donate to support the mission.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Today at 10 a.m., the Regional Food Bank will hold food distribution events at several local sites to support residents ahead of Thanksgiving—serving locations in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Warren, Montgomery, Greene, Washington, Ulster and Dutchess counties. Additional events are planned after Thanksgiving at multiple sites to extend this support.  ABC NEWS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After a deadly crash last Saturday near SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech that killed 19-year-old Ashlee Reeves, students held a private celebration of her life and are asking for a safer crosswalk on State Route 7—so far a petition has collected 2,000 signatures while they reached out to state officials.  ABC NEWS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Change.org petition has been started to remove Megyn Kelly from Bethlehem Central High School’s hall of fame after her comments appeared to downplay the age of Jeffrey Epstein's victims + critics argue the move would uphold the school's values.  The Daily Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albany International Airport is undergoing a $100 million transformation funded by a $60 million state grant and nearly $30 million in federal money that began in summer 2023 and will finish in summer 2026—adding upgraded spaces like a new business center, children’s play area, and faster security lanes. CEO Peter Stuto stated the phased project, including a nearly complete concourse A—will boost traveler comfort and efficiency.  WAMC
  • Former USAID workers, including Michelle Dworkin (Niskayuna) and Kate Lapham (Queensbury), returned to the Capital Region after federal cuts led to the agency's dismantling and thousands of layoffs. They are now seeking public service jobs as part of Governor Hochul’s initiative to recruit former federal employees.  WAMC
  • Crews broke ground Friday on Western Avenue for a new firehouse to replace the old McKownville Fire Station that had cramped bays, outdated infrastructure, and limited capacity—an upgrade intended to boost the volunteer-run department which handles about 300 calls per year.  ABC NEWS 10

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Marcia Hanson, 90, still hikes rugged trails in the High Peaks and stays active with local friends. Born in the Albany area, she credits running and yoga for her strength — and she inspires others to find one more mountain to climb.  Times Union

  • The University at Albany Great Danes swept Bryant 3 to 0 in the America East Semifinal and will face UMBC at 4:00 p.m. today—propelling them into the championship match with strong teamwork.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany promoted Abel Gilet to Associate Head Coach of Track and Field and Cross Country under Director Roberto Vives. Gilet—who joined as a student-athlete in 2013 and advanced from volunteer assistant to throwing coach—earned the new role due to his strong commitment to the team.  University at Albany
  • Ski resorts across the Capital Region are preparing for the season—Whiteface Mountain opened November 15 and Jiminy Peak, Gore Mountain, Hunter Mountain, and Belleayre Mountain open today—while other resorts plan December openings as weather permits. Resort officials noted that season passholder events began November 21 at select sites.  ABC NEWS 10
  • The NCAA announced Friday that former UAlbany assistant coach Jaylen Bond will face a one-year show-cause order—along with a three-game suspension during his first season—after placing 546 impermissible bets totaling over $5,500 while working as a Temple staffer from 2022 to 2024. Bond left UAlbany after the 2024–25 season, was hired by ECU in June, and is no longer listed on the team’s athletics website.  Times Union
  • The University at Albany men's basketball team lost 73-63 to Siena at MVP Arena in Albany—Siena built an early lead and held off a late UAlbany rally. The team will travel on November 28 for the Northern Light's Classic against Colgate at 7:30 p.m.  University at Albany
