COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jewish Family Services marked 20 years of supporting older adults Tuesday, Dec. 16 with a $90,000 boost to its Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community program (designed to help seniors age in place) provided by the State Office for the Aging.  WRGB
  • Federal grants were rescinded in April, leaving local nonprofits to rely on community donations for support. Ten Broeck Mansion (home to historic programs) and others continue fundraising to upgrade facilities and keep offering essential services.  WAMC
  • Hudson, known as the Railroad Puppy after being rescued from local tracks in 2012, was adopted by the Nash family and was put down yesterday at 13 after battling bladder cancer (he had faced early mistreatment).  NewsChannel 13
  • Albany Jewish Community Center will see upgrades soon thanks to a new $5 million state grant, with board chair Dora Fisher and CEO David Posner outlining plans to enhance facilities and programs for local residents.  WRGB
  • Sunmark Credit Union is highlighting 12 nonprofits in its 2026 calendar, with each month showcasing a different Capital Region or Hudson Valley group. Calendars are free and available at Sunmark Credit Union centers in December (check a local branch for details).  NewsChannel 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A $46.9 million Colonial Quad renovation earned LEED Gold certification after gut renovations to Paine and Zenger halls and converting the old dining hall into the Colonial Recreation and Wellness Center (The Well) as announced on Dec. 8. The project met sustainable criteria and enhanced the campus's green record.  University at Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Town councilors on Thursday approved a bid from North Greenbush Ambulance Association in Wynantskill to run Brunswick’s EMS tax district starting Jan. 1. The move will connect residents to advanced life support networks & provide temporary coverage through the Center Brunswick Fire Station.  Times Union
  • Governor Hochul announced a $75M partnership between NY Creates and Japan based SCREEN to boost semiconductor research at Albany NanoTech. The agreement signed in Tokyo on Dec. 16 will use cleanroom and office space in the NanoFab Reflection building to drive future tech jobs and investment.  WRGB
  • At the St. Clare’s pensioners trial today, the judge paused the damages hearing (after two defendants filed for bankruptcy), leaving over 1,100 former employees owed $54.2 million and ongoing proceedings in a holding pattern.  NewsChannel 13
