COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Capital Region Jewish community will host its third annual Jewish Day of Service on Christmas Day (Dec. 25) by partnering with local nonprofits to support essential services at 10 sites including Ronald McDonald House and Albany Medical Center. The event is sold out but a waitlist remains open.  WRGB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Swifty’s Pub reopened its Colonie and Delmar locations on Sunday (the Delaware Ave flagship had its seized signs removed) while the Utica site remains dark as plans to reopen it are expected. Owner Dave Swift said he worked closely with his staff after a tax seizure for unpaid taxes.  Times Union

  • Times Union photographers have curated the Capital Region’s top drone photos of 2025, featuring sweeping aerial views of local landmarks and events such as the smoldering remains of the former Victory Mills (pictured after last June’s fire). ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The state Drinking Water Quality Council rejected a proposal to lower PFAS limits on Monday, Dec. 22. New York’s limits remain at 10 ppt while federal standards set them at 4 ppt (PFAS chemicals), leaving clean water advocates calling for stronger protection.  WAMC

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAlbany women’s basketball outpaced Hofstra 52-43 at Broadview Center Sunday with a 21-point run in the first quarter and strong defense (Delanie Hill led with 14 points). They will next face Vermont on Jan. 1 in conference play.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany’s men’s basketball lost to Cornell 83-75 in the Holiday Hoopla contest at Broadview Center today, and the team will face South Carolina in Columbia on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 6:00 p.m.  University at Albany
