COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cathedral of All Saints has received a $675K grant from the Governor’s REDC to stabilize the 1902 neo-Gothic Guild House and support neighborhood outreach in Arbor Hill — additional funds have brought the total to over $1 million for phased restoration.  Times Union
  • Rensselaer will open a new city dog shelter for lost and stray dogs, run with support from local police and a dog control officer; details on hours, adoptions, and volunteer opportunities will be released in coming weeks.  WRGB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bloom in Albany, from the team behind City Line Bar and Grill, will open Jan. 13 at the corner of New Scotland Avenue and South Allen Street (across from St. Peter’s Hospital) and aims to offer a relaxed spot for everyday meals and special events.  Times Union

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Egg at Empire State Performing Arts Center will re-open its doors on January 8 with a free celebration from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.* Attendees can tour the renovated facility, listen to local DJ Hollyw8d, and enjoy an aerial show from Good Karma Studio.  WAMC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Dec. 29, an ice storm left 3,000+ National Grid customers without power in the Capital Region, triggered hazardous roads and crashes, and delayed restoration. A wind advisory from 1 p.m. Monday to 1 p.m. Tuesday warned that gusts over 40 mph could down tree limbs.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders and Albany Waterway Inc. propose a mile-long canal along the waterfront with two marinas and a Broadway waterway. Artist and historian Len Tantillo said his group will pitch the idea to Gov. Hochul’s office next year (support is aimed at downtown revitalization).  WAMC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Capital Region housing market ended 2025 as one of the nation’s hottest, with quick sales in tight-inventory areas even amid high-interest rates. Experts expect easing mortgage rates and a slight rise in listings to boost affordable buying options in 2026.  Times Union

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAlbany women’s basketball team will kick off their conference season with a home game against Vermont at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1 + they will then host UMass Lowell on Saturday, Jan. 3 at Broadview Center.  University at Albany
  • The UAlbany men’s basketball team lost 67 (score) to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Tuesday night in Columbia, S.C. and will travel to Lowell to face UMass Lowell at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex.  University at Albany
  • U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced that the aerials (scheduled for Jan. 11-12 in Lake Placid) and moguls (at Waterville Valley, NH Jan. 15-16) have been moved from Utah because of warm weather to maintain Olympic qualification. Local resorts in the Northeast anticipate increased interest in the events.  WAMC
