“THE STRAIGHT STORY ”

Starring Richard Farnsworth and Harry Dean Stanton

A heartwarming true story of an elderly man who travels hundreds of miles on a riding lawn mower to visit his estranged brother after learning of his declining health. Along the way, he encounters strangers whose lives are touched by his quiet determination, kindness, and wisdom.

“The Straight Story”

It Is Never Too Late to Make the Journey

By Leonard Perlmutter (Ram Lev)

Sometimes the longest journey is the one that takes us back to someone we love. David Lynch’s The Straight Story tells the remarkable story of Alvin Straight, an elderly man who learns that his estranged brother, Lyle, has suffered a stroke. The brothers have not spoken for years. Alvin’s own health is failing, his eyesight prevents him from driving, and the distance between them is considerable.

Nevertheless, Alvin decides to go see his brother. His vehicle is a riding lawn mower. And so begins one of cinema’s most unusual pilgrimages.

Based on an actual journey Alvin Straight undertook in 1994, the film moves slowly across the rural Midwest. But its real landscape is not geographical. It is the landscape of a human life—the relationships we have cherished, the mistakes we have made, the wounds we have carried, and the opportunities that may still remain to make peace.

Alvin cannot change the past. He cannot recover the years that he and his brother have lost. He cannot become young again. But he can choose what he will do now.

That is what makes The Straight Story such an appropriate Thanks-giving contemplation. Continue reading
